Covenant Defeats MU Women's Hoops, 60-49

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Covenant used a third-quarter surge to defeat the Methodist women's basketball team, 60-49, at the Barnes PE Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Monarchs (10-6, 5-3 USA South) trailed by just two points at intermission (25-23), but a sluggish third quarter resulted in the Scots (6-10, 4-5 USA South) outscoring MU 22-7 in the period for a 47-30 advantage entering the fourth quarter. Methodist outscored Covenant in the final period, 19-13.

Methodist shot 3-of-12 (.250) in the third quarter with five turnovers, while the Scots countered at 47.4 percent shooting (9-19) and held a 12-5 rebounding edge in the period. The Scots scored the first seven points of the period, including a pair of buckets from Aleigha Williams, to take a 32-23 lead by the 7:41 mark.

Jasmine Canady answered with a layup for the Monarchs to make it 32-25, but Covenant held the Green and Gold to just seven points the remainder of the quarter and got offensive contributions from six different players in the stanza for the aforementioned 17-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

Methodist was able to trim its deficit to single digits on Monique Lofton's triple that made it 56-47 but fewer than two minutes remained on the clock and Bekah Walter answered with a short jump shot for the Scots to restore an 11-point lead with 1:21 to play.

Sydney Bryan led the Monarchs with 11 points, and Alexis Wallace added 10. Canady had nine points and Jalisia Campbell led MU with seven rebounds. Allison Dones handed out five assists.

For Covenant, Williams scored a game-high 14 points, and Walter added 12. Kaley Hallmark added nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Joanna Smith had eight rebounds and four steals.

Methodist is back on the court on Wednesday when it hosts LaGrange at 4:00 pm. The game is a make up game from last weekend when winter weather forced it to be postponed.
