Scots Outpace Monarchs, 52-13

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Maryville raced out to a 38-7 lead by halftime in earning a 52-13 win over Methodist on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.

The Scots (3-1, 1-0 USA South) got three touchdown passes from Nick Myers to three different receivers in the first quarter to assume a 21-0 lead at the 1:01 mark. The Monarchs (1-3, 0-1) got on the board early in the second period as E'Mond Brown plunged in from two yards out to make it 21-7.

Just over three minutes later, Trenton Shuler scored on a short three-yard run to make it 28-7, and on MU's ensuing possession, Xavier Adams was picked off by Pierre Chadwick who returned it 86 yards to paydirt to make it 35-7 as Methodist was unable to mount much of a comeback. Valdani Bastien added a 19-yard touchdown reception midway through the fourth quarter to cap the day's scoring.

Of Note:
- Maryville only outgained MU, 476-389, but benefited from a bevy of odd plays. The Scots came up with four turnovers, including the aforementioned pick-6, they recovered a pair of "pooch" onside kicks to regain possession and a blocked punt in deep in MU territory was recovered in the end zone for a safety by Eddie Burton.
- Methodist was credited with a blocked punt as well as MC's Kenneth Horne appeared a shank a low-line drive that struck an MU player just behind the line of scrimmage and gave the Monarchs possession at Maryville's 24 yard line.
- Adams ran for a career-high 134 yards on 16 carries, including a 44-yard scamper early in the game. He also completed 18 of 35 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown, accounting for 304 yards of total offense. The 170 yards passing marked his second-highest total this season.
- After not taking a sack for the second time this season, Adams has now been brought down for just five sacks all season. Conversely, the MU defense has come up with 10 sacks on the season.
- Adams' counterpart, Nick Myers, completed 22 of 41 passes for 293 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He completed passes to 10 different receivers and no MC receiver had more than 52 yards receiving.
- Kyle Colborn, Ethan White and Daiquan Hunt all had seven tackles to lead the Monarchs defensive effort. Zayd Stivender came up with a pair of sacks and Sean Kennedy added five tackles, including one for loss, and a forced fumble.
- Michael Bailey led the Scots with eight tackles, all solo efforts, and Pierre Chadwick added seven stops and the long INT return for a touchdown.
- After a strong 2015 season, E'Montie Dears is still in search of his first 100-yard game in 2016. He has eclipsed 80 yards just once (vs. Apprentice) thus far.

The Monarchs are back at home next weekend when they host Averett at 1:00 pm.
