FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist women's soccer team scored six goals in the first half on its way to an 8-0 victory against William Peace on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Monarchs improve to 4-5 on the year with a 4-2 conference record. Meanwhile, the Pacers fall to 2-8-1 overall behind a 1-5 league record.
MU opened the scoring in the first few minutes when
Haley Bowles tallied a goal with an assist from
Taylor Cavazos at the 5:10 mark. Bowles added another goal in the 13th minute with another assist from Cavazos. Minutes later, Cavazos extended the lead to 3-0 with an assist from
Jasmine Newman at the 15:53 mark.
Sara Snotherly took advantage of a misplayed ball and netted the ball to increase the lead, 4-0. In the 30th minute,
Miranda Gay registered a goal after receiving an assist from
Caitlyn Shea. The Monarchs added one more goal at the 30:54 mark after
Capri Clark posted her first goal of the season to make the halftime score 6-0.
In the second half, Newman registered her seventh goal of the season to increase the deficit to 7-0 at the 60:15 mark. Clark registered the final goal in the 78th minute as MU held on for an 8-0 win.
The Monarchs held a 26-0 shot advantage, while also holding an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Meaghan O'Meara (4-5) earned the win after not facing a shot in 45 minutes before
Catie Gaughan finished the game in net. Shannon Maddex (2-7-1) tallied seven saves in 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon.
MU returns to action tomorrow, Oct. 2, against Greensboro at the Monarch Soccerplex beginning at 1 pm.
