Ferrum Holds Off Methodist, 35-30

FERRUM, Va. -- Tyree Stidem had over 100 yards receiving and Jay Robinson hauled in a pair of touchdown receptions, but the Methodist football team fell at Ferrum, 35-30, on Saturday evening.

The Monarchs (1-5, 0-3 USA South) opened up a 30-13 lead in the second half but saw the host Panthers (5-3, 3-2) score the game's final 22 points for the come-from-behind victory. Brian McCann's third rushing touchdown of the day, a 37-yarder, with 13:27 left in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the contest.

Following McCann's go-ahead score, Methodist had two more possessions but were forced to punt each time and Ferrum's final drive used up 5:43 of clock to seal the win.

The Monarchs went up 3-0 on Landon Cheviron's 33-yard field goal late in the first quarter before McCann pushed the Panthers in front 6-3 with a four-yard scamper at the 10:44 mark of the second quarter. The Monarchs blocked the point after.

At the 4:34 mark of the second quarter, Xavier Adams found Robinson from 28 yards out for a 9-6 lead after Cheviron's PAT failed. With 2:56 left in the quarter McCann scored from 13 yards out to make it 13-9, but MU marched 74 yards in just 2:20 and took a 16-13 lead into the break after Adams' 29-yard pass to Tyree Stidem.

Adams' third touchdown pass of the game, a nine yarder to Robinson, gave the Monarchs a 23-13 lead after Cheviron's PAT with 10:02 left in the third quarter. Deo'Vont'e Doe added a 14-yard rushing touchdown at the 7:55 mark to make it 30-13 in favor of MU.

The Panthers got a 71-yard kickoff return from McCann and converted the short field into a five-yard scoring run from Harvey Taylor followed by a successful two-point conversion to make it 30-21 at the 6:38 mark.

With 18 seconds left in the third, and following a missed field goal attempt by Cheviron, Ferrum cut its deficit to two at 30-28 when Khari Chase scored on a 52-yard run before McCann scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Adams finished 16 of 34 passing for 223 yards with three touchdowns and one pick. He also gained a team-best 81 yards on the ground, averaging 7.4 yards on 11 carries. Stidem had six receptions for 104 yards to lead the receiving corps.

Defensively, Kris Evans and Kyle Colborn each tallied 13 tackles. Colborn had four tackles for loss. Daniel Smith chipped in nine tackles. Zayd Stivender added seven tackles and one sack.

For Ferrum, Taylor was 6 of 13 passing for 95 yards and added 87 yards rushing on 21 carries. McCann finished with 205 yards rushing on 31 carries and the three touchdowns. Chase had 72 yards on just four carries.

The Monarchs play host to Greensboro next week at 1:00 pm.
