FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist women's soccer team scored in the 110th minute to defeat Greensboro, 2-1, in double-overtime at the Monarch Soccerplex in the quarterfinals of the USA South Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Monarchs advance to the semifinals of the league tournament and move to 9-5-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Pride end its season with a 10-7-3 record.
Greensboro opened the scoring at the 23:52 mark when Lauren Greeson registered her eighth goal of the year with an assist from Devin D'Agostin, 1-0. The goal held through to the end of the first half.
In the second half, MU tallied 12 shots, including eight on net and two that hit the goalpost. In the 85th minute,
Capri Clark took a pass from
Jasmine Newman and beat the goalkeeper to tie the game, 1-1. Neither team found the back of the net in the last five minutes of regulation as the contest headed to overtime.
Both sides were unable to score in the first 10 minute period as a second overtime period began. The Monarchs quickly registered four shots, including one that hit the crossbar, before
Haley Bowles took a pass from
Sara Snotherly and notched the game-winning goal, 2-1, with just 15 seconds remaining on the clock.
Goalkeeper
Clare Witt (2-0) made four saves in the victory, while Brittany Morrison recorded eight saves on Saturday afternoon.
Methodist outshot the Pride 25-9, while also holding an edge in corner kicks 5-1.
After advancing to the semifinals of the league tournament, the Monarchs will return to action on Friday, Nov. 4, against the No. 1 seed in the West, Salem, beginning at 3 pm.
