Methodist Women's Hoops Drops 72-58 Decision to Randolph

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Methodist's women's basketball team dropped a 72-58 contest against Randolph on the first day of the Jean Edge Classic hosted by N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
 
The WildCats (2-0) saw 13 different players score and forced 29 MU turnovers in producing the 14-point win over the Monarchs (0-2).
 
Methodist fell behind 12-4 midway through the first quarter but used a 7-0 run to get as close as 12-11 on a Kaneya Chambers free throw at the 1:13 mark. Randolph went back up five, but Shelly McDonald knocked down a jumper with 20 seconds to play to make it 16-13.
 
MU started the second quarter on a 6-0 run to assume a 19-16 lead on another Chambers free throw, but the WildCats answered with 10 straight points to regain a 26-19 lead on Kiana Scott's layup with 4:59 on the clock. The Monarchs managed to make it a two-point game late in the half before going into the break down 30-26.
 
Randolph went up by as many as 13 in the third quarter and after MU cut its deficit to six points, the WildCats opened up a double-digit lead once again in the fourth quarter and maintained it for the final 5:54.
 
The Monarchs shot 39.7 percent (23-58) as a team to 40.0 percent (28-70) for the WildCats. Randolph shot 82.4 percent (14-17) from the charity stripe compared to 37.0 percent (10-27) for the Green and Gold. The WildCats also held a slight 48-444 edge on the glass.
 
Chambers led MU with 14 points, and Christian Sanders added 12 on 5 of 7 shooting. Shelly McDonald added eight points and eight rebounds, while Jalisia Campbell chipped in nine points, 16 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
 
Calloway had 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Korin Harrris added 13 points and three steals. Danielle Rizzari scored nine points, and Daijah Johnson totaled eight points, four assists and four steals.
 
The Monarchs will take on Hood on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
