Sewanee Women's Basketball Defeats Monarchs, 87-71

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Jalisia Campbell scored a season-high 21 points, but the Methodist women's basketball team dropped an 87-71 decision to Sewanee on the first day of Transylvania's Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday evening.
 
Campbell shot 6 of 13 from the field and 9 of 14 from the line and was one of four MU players in double figures. Christian Sanders, Kaneya Chambers and Amber Scott each scored 10 points for the Monarchs (1-4).
 
The Monarchs and the Tigers (2-3) played a back-and-forth opening quarter with the Monarchs never trailing in the opening 10 minutes. The Green and Gold led by five points (19-14) with just over three minutes remaining in the period, but a late surge by the Tigers tied the contest at 23-23 after the first quarter.
 
Sewanee's surge continued into the second quarter as the Tigers outscored MU 17-3 over the first 5:29 of the quarter to take a 40-26 lead by the 4:31 mark. Bella Taylor, who scored 30 points in all, knocked down a trio of three pointers to lead the Tigers' surge.
 
The Monarchs were able to halve their deficit with an 8-1 run to get to 41-34 with 2:34 left in the period, but the Tigers answered with an 8-1 run of their own to take a 49-35 lead into the break. Sewanee's offense continued to roll in the third quarter outscoring the Monarchs 22-11 to take a 71-46 lead into the final period. Methodist outscored Sewanee 25-16 over the final 10 minutes.
 
Methodist shot a season-high 44.6 percent (25-56) from the field and hit on 16 of 23 free throws for a 69.6 percent mark also a season-high. The Tigers shot 46.5 percent (33-71) from the field but launched 38 three pointers, hitting on 15 of them (.395). Sewanee out rebounded MU, 35-32, and the Tigers notched 27 assists on their 33 made buckets.
 
In addition to her 10 points, Scott pulled down a team-high five rebounds to lead MU. Campbell and Lillian Geehring each handed out four assists.
 
Taylor's 30 points came on 12 of 19 shooting, including 6 of 10 from beyond the arc. She added four assists and five steals. Hannah McCormick added 16 points and five rebounds, Corey Caulder added 12 points and five boards and Allison Hitchcock chipped in 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Sue Kim added 11 points and 10 assists.
 
Methodist will take on the host Pioneers on Sunday beginning at 3:00 pm.
