Methodist Drops Huntingdon in Men's Hoops, 87-63

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Methodist men's basketball team earned an 87-63 victory against Huntingdon to extend its winning streak to four games on Saturday afternoon.
 
Bryan Rouse led the Monarchs (5-5) with a game-high 23 points after scoring 15 in the first half. Rouse tallied at least four three-pointers in a game for the third time this season. Davion Ayabarreno shot 7 of 12 from the floor to finish the day with 19 points and added six rebounds, while Rae Hall registered 15 points with six rebounds and six assists.
 
For the Hawks (0-8), Wyatt Popovich led the way with 15 points on five of nine shooting from beyond the arc. Andre Ashley registered 10 points and five rebounds, while Jahal Robinson also tallied 10 points with a game-high seven assists.
 
The Green and Gold opened the game on a 15-5 run over nearly five minutes, including seven points from Rouse. MU worked the lead to an 11-point advantage (25-14) with seven minutes remaining in the half before Huntingdon cut the deficit down to two (30-28) at the 4:16 mark after making all four three-point attempts. The Monarchs went into halftime with an eight point advantage (40-32) after forcing two turnovers and scoring three times in the final 50 seconds.
 
In the second half, the Monarchs never led by less than five points and closed the game with a 20-3 run over five and a half minutes on 6 of 12 shooting from the field. The Hawks shot just three of nine with three turnovers during the stretch.
 
As a team, MU shot 51.5 percent (34-66) from the floor, including a 54.8 percent clip (17-31) in the first half. Huntindgon finished with a 37.5 percent (21-56) mark from the field, but made 11 of 24 (45.8 percent) from beyond the arc. The Monarchs also held a 46-30 advantage in rebounds and outscored the Hawks 46-18 in the paint.
 
In addition, Troynell Reese ended with a game-high seven rebounds to go along with five points and three blocks in 16 minutes off the bench. Jackson Whitley finished with 13 points on five of seven shooting with five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Meanwhile, Brandon McLean registered eight points with four rebounds and two blocks on Saturday afternoon.
 
Methodist remains idle until after Christmas as it returns to action on Dec. 29 against Oglethorpe beginning at 6 pm.
