ATLANTA, Ga. – The Methodist women's basketball team fell to Oglethorpe, 76-55, on the first day of the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Classic on Saturday night.
For the Monarchs (2-7),
Jalisia Campbell tallied her third-consecutive double-double after posting a team-high 12 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds. The reigning USA South Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week,
Christian Sanders, registered 10 points with three assists and three steals.
The Stormy Petrels (7-4) were led by Jada Triplett who shot six of nine from the floor to finish the night with 16 points and added two rebounds and a pair of assists. Brooke Simpson totaled 12 points with four rebounds, two assists and three steals, while Rebecca Spry finished with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
The Green and Gold opened the first period with an early lead just over two minutes into the quarter, but was held to 3 of 13 shooting from the floor. Oglethorpe finished the half shooting 45.7 percent (16-35) from the floor, including 10 of 15 from the field, and led 52-22 at the recess.
In the third quarter, MU was able to cut into the deficit after a quick 12-3 run in the middle of the period on its way to outscoring the home side in the second half, but was unable to make the comeback.
The Monarchs finished shooting 33.9 percent (20-59) from the floor, while the Stormy Petrels finished with a 37.3 percent mark (22-59) after only shooting 25.0 percent (6-24) in the second half. MU held a 45-38 advantage in rebounds.
In addition,
Lillian Geehring ended the night with four points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Sydney Bryan also finished with 10 points and added four rebounds and two blocks.
Methodist continues play in the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Classic, which is hosted by Oglethorpe, tomorrow, Dec. 18, against Centre at 2 pm.
