LEXINGTON, Va. — Davion Ayabarreno and Jackson Whitley each recorded a double-double and four Monarchs scored in double figures as MU toppled Washington and Lee 73-54 on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.
Ayabarreno scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Whitley added 10 points and 10 boards to go with four blocked shots. Rae Hall and Blake Davis each shot 5 of 7 from the floor and scored 10 points as well.
As a team, Methodist (2-5) shot 53.6 percent (30-56) as a team and held W&L to just 31.6 percent shooting (18-57). MU also out rebounded the Generals 37-28. W&L was paced by Kevin Kearns' 13 points, though he shot just 3 of 10. Clayton Murtha added eight points and five boards.
The game was evenly played for the first 12+ minutes before a big MU run gave the Green and Gold a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Tied at 17-17 with 7:02 on the clock, Hall knocked down a jumper to kickstart a 16-2 run that Zach Jenerette capped with a pair of free throws with 2:13 left until halftime. The Monarchs would eventually take a 38-25 to the locker room.
W&L cut its deficit to just eight points early in the second half at 42-34, but MU rattled off a 12-0 burst to assume a 20-point lead (54-34) on a Bryan Rouse triple with 13:40 to play. The MU lead would reach as many as 29 in the second half as the Monarchs cruised to their second win of the season.
