MU Women's Lacrosse Tips Berry, 7-6

ROME, Ga. -- In its 2016 season opener, Madison Ronelli scored four times, including the go-ahead goal  with just over a minute to play, and the Methodist women's lacrosse team picked up a 7-6 win over host Berry College on Saturday afternoon.

Tied 6-6 with 1:41 left in regulation, Emily Ewin made her fifth save of the game, stopping the Vikings from taking the lead. After a successful clear attempt by the Monarchs (1-0), Ronelli tallied the game-winning goal, unassisted, at the 1:05 mark.

The Vikings (0-1) had a chance to force overtime with a free position shot by Kelsey McAnnally with two seconds on the clock, but another big save by Emily Ewin preserved MU's lead and Berry's follow-up shot, which found the back of the net, came after the final horn.

Methodist struck first on a goal by Sareena Coleman, assisted by Sarah Ewin, at the 27:51 mark of the first half. Berry answered with three goals by McAnnally, Ashley Kesselring and Angelica Miller, respectively, in the next eight minutes to grab a 3-1 lead, but an unassisted goal by Ronelli at 13:52 and another at 9:27, this time off a feed from Emily Brennen, tied the game once more, 3-3.

With 44 seconds left in the first half, McAnnally scored once more to push the Vikings ahead, 4-3, but Coleman answered 17 seconds later, tying the game 4-4 off a feed from Brennen.

After the break, the Monarchs took the lead, 5-4, on Sarah Ewin's first collegiate goal, assisted by Coleman at 23:42. Berry managed to tie the game twice more in the second half, but back-to-back goals by Ronelli, including the game winner, kept the game in Methodist's favor.

For the game, Ronelli recorded three ground balls and a game-high four draw controls to go with her four goals, also adding three caused turnovers. Coleman had two goals and an assist. Kaelyn Howard tallied two caused turnovers and Sarah Ewin recorded three draw controls with one assist and one ground ball.

Emily Ewin picked up the win making six saves in goal for Methodist.

The Monarchs are back in action next Saturday as they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on Guilford at 1:00 pm.
