Strong Third Quarter Lifts MU Women’s Basketball Over Meredith, 60-49

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Methodist women's basketball team picked up its sixth conference win on Saturday afternoon, defeating the host Meredith College Avenging Angels, 60-49, in Weatherspoon Gym.
 
Now 11-7 (6-4 USAS) on the year, the Monarch offense shot 40.6% (26-of-64) for the game, including a dominant third quarter in which MU shot an outstanding 63.2% (12-of-19) from the field. Defensively, the Monarchs held the host Angels (6-13, 4-7 USAS) to 30.4% (14-of-46).
 
A jumper by Jasmine Canady within the first 15 seconds of play served as MU's only lead of the first quarter, 2-0, as back-to-back layups by Kim Hinton and Gabi Jessup started 11-3 run by Meredith to give the host its largest lead of the game, 11-5, at the 2:50 mark. The Monarchs closed out the first quarter scoring with a layup plus one by Alexis Wallace to bring the deficit to three (11-8) at the break.
 
Methodist took the lead for the first time in the second quarter, 23-21, with 2:30 on the clock with an Ayanna Pegues layup, but Meredith took back the lead 26-23 with a pair of free throws and a three pointer by Jessi Hayes just three seconds before halftime.
 
A halftime break seemed to be just what Methodist needed as it came racing out of the gates on a 14-0 run to gain a 37-26 lead at the 7:06 mark. The Green and Gold continued to put on the offensive pressure for the remainder of the quarter, tacking on another 12 points to MC's 11, for a 49-37 lead going into the final quarter.
 
The Monarchs gained their largest lead of the night at the 7:50 mark (51-37) on a Canady layup, and kept the deficit to at least eight points for the remainder of the game.
 
For the second game in a row, Pegues led the Green and Gold in scoring, going 8-for-12 from the field on the way to a 16-point, six-rebound, three-block night. Wallace registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, adding four steals, while Canady recorded 13 points. Dones tallied five assists to go along with five steals and Jalisia Campbell pulled down nine boards. 
 
Jessup led the Angels in scoring, tallying a game-high 20 points while Hayes chipped in 12 points with six boards and six assists. Hinton tallied a team-high nine rebounds and Raven Gregory came off the bench to pull down seven boards with four steals.
 
The Monarchs will continue on the road as they travel to Rocky Mount, N.C. on Feb. 10 to compete against host N.C. Wesleyan at 5:30 pm.
