Methodist and St. Andrews Split Softball Doubleheader

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Methodist split a softball doubleheader with St. Andrews on Tuesday evening at Price Field.

MU took game one, 6-3, then fell, 3-2, in game two. Methodist is now 2-4 on the season, while St. Andrews sits at 4-13 overall.

Heather Williams led off the opener with a triple and scored on Alanna Anderson's ground out for an early 1-0 lead. A Christine Bowman ground out drove in another run and MU led 2-0 after just one inning.

A passed ball allowed the Knights to get a run back in the second inning for a 2-1 game.

The Monarchs got a pair of runs in the fourth to make it 4-1. Kelsey Harrington scored on Ashley Benge's single to left center, and a passed ball for SAU allowed Benge to score. The Monarchs added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 6-1 before a brief St. Andrews rally in the seventh.

Sydney Foland picked up her first collegiate win, allowing three runs (2 ER) on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in a complete game performance. Kori Ballard took the loss for the Knights, giving up four runs (3 ER) on seven hits and a walk in 3.1 innings.

Kristen Bailly was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Monarchs, and Natalie High was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Williams and Emily Hester each had a base hit with a run scored.

In game two, the Knights scratched across a run in the first inning on Sam Lowder's sharp double down the left field line for a quick 1-0 lead. St. Andrews extended its lead to 3-0 in fourth inning. Ballard and Lowder led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Ballard advanced to third on a fly ball to left and Lowder stole second to put runners on second and third with two outs. Jenny Castanon followed with a single to left that plated both runners.

In the fifth inning, Morgan Faircloth led off the bottom half with a double and Benge reached on an error. With one out Hester walked to load the bases, and Alanna Anderson put MU on the board with a single that, coupled with an error, plated two runs for MU to make it 3-2. Nicole Heinrich drew a one-out walk to load the bases with one out once again, but a pop up and a strikeout ended MU's rally.

Methodist went down in order in both the sixth and seventh innings as St. Andrew was able to hold on for the win.

Heinrich was tagged with the loss (1-2). She allowed three runs on six hits and one walk in 7.0 innings. Hawley Ill earned the win after surrendering just two runs (1 ER) on three hits and five walks with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Anderson was 1-for-4 with an RBI for MU, and Hester was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.

Lowder was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run for SAU. Ballard had one hit in three at bats with a run scored, and Castanon was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.

Methodist is back in action on Saturday in a doubleheader at Meredith beginning at 12:00 pm.
