Methodist Softball Drops Doubleheader to Greensboro

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team was swept in a USA South doubleheader by Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at Price Field.
 
MU dropped the opener, 8-0 (6 INN), then saw GC rally for a 6-4 win in the nightcap. Greensboro is now 14-10 overall and 3-5 in the league. Methodist falls to 4-16 on the season and 1-5 in league play.
 
In the opener, Greensboro's Dawn Harris limited the Monarchs to two hits in 6.0 innings. She walked five but kept MU off the scoreboard in improving to 6-5 on the season. Nicole Heinrich took the loss for MU, allowing seven runs (5 ER) on eight hits and a walk with one strikeout in 5.0 innings.
 
Allyson Yeager started the scoring for GC with an RBI single in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. Sarah Tompkins made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly, and Yeager then came home to score on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead after one.
 
Heinrich settled in after the first inning until the Pride struck again in the sixth. Brittainy Rush made it 4-0 with an RBI single, and Sarah Connolly and Harris followed with RBI base hits of their own. Alexis Hall's RBI ground out made it 7-0 and Madison Crisco capped the scoring with an RBI single for an 8-0 advantage.
 
Tompkins and Connolly each had two hits for the Pride. Heather Williams and Hannah Key accounted for both the Methodist base hits in game one.
 
In game two, Yeager spotted GC to a 1-0 lead with a single to left that drove in Cisco before MU answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
 
Williams led off the bottom of the inning with a single and took second on a wild pitch from Harris. With one out, Natalie High singled up the middle to score Williams and tie the game a 1-1. Kristen Bailly reached on a fielder's choice and William was able to beat the throw home with High taking third for a 2-1 lead.
 
The Monarchs' lead grew to 2-1 on a bases-loaded walk to Hannah Key, and Christine Bowman followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Bailly for a 3-1 lead. Danielle Brendes capped the scoring for MU with a single to left that brought in Heidi Foreman and gave the Monarchs a 4-1 advantage.
 
The Pride made it 4-2 on an MU error in the third inning then added four runs on four hits and a pair of MU errors in the fifth inning.
 
Emily Hester allowed six runs (2 ER) on 10 hits and  two walks with a strikeout in 4.2 innings to take the loss. Maddy Weherholt picked up the win for Greensboro. She tossed 4.0 innings of scoreless relief after coming on for Harris in the fourth.
 
Williams, High, Bailly, Brendes and Hester all singled for the Monarchs. Kali Puckett was 3-for-4 for the Pride, and Yeager and Tompkins each had a pair of base hits.
 
Methodist will play at Salem on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 pm.
