Monarchs Fall Short to Guilford, 12-7

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's lacrosse team came up short to Guilford, 12-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
 
After falling behind 5-1 at the half, the Monarchs pulled to within two, 7-5, at the start of the fourth quarter as they outscored Guilford, 4-2, in the period. Kyle Clarkson and Jay Robinson each scored for MU to make it 5-3 by the 6:35 mark of the period.
 
Joe Eggleston answered for GC, but Jake Smerka got the goal back at 4:52 to make it 6-4. Cam Davis restored a three-goal lead, 7-4, for the Quakers before MU clawed back within two one more time at 7-5 on Chris Lombardi's goal off a feed from Smerka with 2:51 on the clock.
 
The rally was short lived however as the Quakers opened the final period with three straight goals to make it 10-5 on Adam Fiore's goal with 11:42 left to play. The Monarchs were unable to pull closer than four the rest of the way.
 
Parker Styles was solid in goal for the Quakers, making 18 saves on the day and adding three ground balls and an assist. Jackson Bingham took the loss for MU, he came up with eight saves on the day.
 
The Monarchs outshot Guilford, 47-32, including 31-13 in the second half. MU also had 37 ground balls to 25 for Guilford and won 15-of-22 face offs.
 
Jay Robinson (3g) and Jake Smerka (2g, 1a) each had three points to lead MU. Jordan DeSalvo won 15-of-22 face offs with eight ground balls, and Dan Richards had three caused turnovers to go with three ground balls. John Tartline added four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
 
Fiore led the Quakers with a goal and three assists. Joe Eggleston scored three goals, and Zachary Berkowitz and Ian Wiesenberg each scored twice.
 
Methodist is at Huntingdon Saturday at 3:00 pm CST.
