NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport's bats were blazing on Tuesday night as the Captains outhit the Monarchs, 18-7, en route to an 18-6 win at Captains Park.
With the loss, Methodist falls to an overall record of 16-10 while CNU improves to 19-5.
The Monarchs grabbed their only lead of the game in the top of the first, 1-0. Alex Rodriguez led off with a single to shortstop and a sacrifice bunt by Stephen Nalls pushed him to second. After Rodriguez stole third and a strikeout by Davis Cass, Tyler Hardee walked and a passed ball allowed Rodriguez to score.
In the bottom of the second, Connor Henderson sent a three-run home run over the center-fence to give the Captains a 3-1 lead. Four batters later, Jordan Mason plated Collin Lawless with a sacrifice fly to center and CNU went ahead, 4-1.
CNU tacked on two more runs in the third before scoring four more in the third with home runs by A.J. Nicely and Tommy Vitaletti to gain a 10-1 advantage.
Methodist added three runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Nalls and a sacrifice fly by Cass to bring the score to 10-4.
The Captains added eight more runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 18-4 before the Monarchs were able to score their final two runs in the top of the ninth. Adam Gunn drew a lead-off walk and after a strikeout by Austin Fuentes, advanced to second on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks by Alex Dockery and Rodriguez loaded the bases. Brennan Brown struck out to put two outs on the board but another walk drawn by Cass forced Gunn home and a passed ball gave Dockery the opportunity to score and bring the eventual final score to 18-6.
Rodriguez went 2-for-3 and Dockery was 2-for-2 and both finished with two runs scored and two walks. Cass and Nalls each recorded two RBI.
Starting pitcher Greg Johnson took the loss, after tossing the first 2.0 innings and allowing four runs (3 ER) on four hits.
Nicely finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and one run scored and Vitaletti was 2-for-5 with two RBI and three scored runs.
Craig Johnson earned the win for the Captains after pitching 3.0 innings in relief and allowing no runs and just one hit with three strikeouts.
Methodist continues on the road as the travel to LaGrange, Ga. to take on host LaGrange College in a three-game series beginning on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
