FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team closed out the home portion of its 2016 season with a doubleheader sweep of Mary Baldwin on Sunday afternoon.

The Monarchs prevailed 10-2 in six innings in game one, then posted a 3-1 win in the nightcap. Prior to game one, Methodist took a moment to recognize its five seniors,
Natalie High,
Christine Bowman,
Kelsey Harrington,
Nicole Heinrich and
Heather Williams.
Â
In the opener, Methodist raced out to a 6-0 lead after two.
Kristen Bailly and Harrington each had RBI doubles in the first inning, and Heinrich added an RBI single. MU's final run came on a fly ball to left with
Alanna Anderson on third and as Anderson raced home, the ball struck her for an error, allowing MU to take a 4-0 lead.

In the second, Harrington drove a single to the right side that scored
Morgan Faircloth, and Bailly followed with a double to left that scored Williams to make it 6-0.

The Fighting Squirrels got two runs back in the fourth to make it 6-2, but MU closed out the game with four runs in the sixth, including High's two-run single that drove in Williams and Harrington with the game-winning runs.

Bowman picked up the win, allowing two runs (1 ER) on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Williams was 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs, and Harrington had three hits in four at bats with two RBIs and two runs. High and Bailly each drove in two runs, and Faircloth had two hits in three at bats with a run and an RBI.

In the nightcap, Heinrich surrendered just one unearned run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Methodist scored its first run in the opening frame on
Allyson Aycock's double that drove in High. Bowman made it 2-0 in the second with a single, and Harrington scored on a fielder's choice in the fifth to make it 3-0.

Harrington was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, and Aycock,
Katelyn Howell,
Savannah Dunn and Bowman all had base hits for MU.

The Monarchs will wrap up the 2016 season on Wednesday at Guilford beginning at 3:00 pm.
