Maryville Edges Methodist Baseball, 4-3, in USA South Tournament Opener

WILSON, N.C. – The Methodist baseball team fell, 4-3, to the Scots of Maryville College on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament held at Fleming Stadium.
 
After today's loss, Methodist (19-15) will take on the first-seeded Ferrum Panthers on Friday at 10:00 am.
 
After two scoreless frames, the Scots (27-13) gained a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the third, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Zach Blonder.
 
The Monarchs evened the score in the top of the fourth when Will May sent an RBI-single to right field to score Stephen Nalls, who reached after getting hit by a pitch.
 
Maryville regained the lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the fourth when Evan Ezrell tripled to right center to score Brendan Lawler before a sacrifice fly by Clifton Dempsey brought him home.
 
In the top of the seventh, back-to-back doubles by Alex Rodriguez and Alex Dockery brought the Green and Gold within one, 3-2.
 
The Scots tallied their last run of the game in the eighth on a single by Chris Ervin to right center, going ahead, 4-2.
 
With two outs and runners on first and second in the top of the ninth, a sacrifice bunt by Nalls advanced the runners before Ray Lanners grounded out to first base, allowing the runner on third, Lucas Scott, to cross the plate and tally Methodist's final score of the game.
 
On the day, Scott was 3-for-4 and scored once and Dockery was 2-for-4 and recorded one run scored.
 
For Maryville, Andrew Henry was 3-for-4 with one run scored and Lawler was 2-for-3 and scored once.
 
Travis Johnson (4-3) was handed the loss after pitching the first 7.1 innings and allowing four runs (3 ER) on nine hits with seven strikeouts. Aaron O'Neil and Madison Cook finished out the game for the Monarchs and together did not allow any hits.
 
Seth Debity (7-4) earned the win for the Scots, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Joe Jones entered for the final 1.2 innings, earning the save after allowing one run on one hit.
