FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist women's lacrosse team fell, 17-10, to Coker on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
The Cobras (5-5), an NCAA Division II team, scored the game's first three goals for a 3-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest.
Sareena Coleman made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal at the 27:54 mark to make it 3-1, and MU's deficit still stood at two goals (6-4) after
Emily Brennen scored with 10:37 left in the opening half.
After briefly falling behind by four goals, Brennen made it a three-goal deficit with another tally, this one coming 1:22 before halftime. Both teams traded goals in the opening minutes of the second half, but three straight scores by the Cobras put MU in a 12-6 hole with 23:33 left to play. Coker would extend its lead to as many as eight (16-8) before
Madison Ronelli and
Renee Burt scored for the Monarchs to make it 16-10 with just over two minutes to play. Karah Huntsinger capped the scoring with a tally at the 51 second mark for the 17-10 final.
Coker won 19 draw controls to 10 for the Monarchs, and outshot MU, 34-25, which helped offset its 27 turnovers. The Cobras were also 14-of-21 on clear attempts and MU was 14-of-25.
Ronelli led MU with three goals, and Brennen chipped in two goals and an assist. Burt also had three points on a goal and two helpers.
Bianca Terenzi led the Monarchs with six ground balls and three caused turnovers, and
Sarena Pillow had three draw controls.
Haley McCusker (4g, 2a), Faith Kent (3g, 2a) and Mackenzie Baker (3g, 1a) led the Cobra offense. Baker also had five ground balls, Marabeth Durden came up with six draw controls and five caused turnovers.
Methodist wraps up regular season play on Saturday when its hosts Sweet Briar at 12:00 pm.
