FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist women's soccer team scored six goals in both periods to post its first win of the season, 12-0, over Mary Baldwin in USA South conference play on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Monarchs move to 1-3 on the year with a 1-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Squirrels fall to 0-6 overall and drop to 0-1 in conference action.
MU opened the scoring on the day in the 13th minute when
Jasmine Newman tallied her second goal of the season after receiving a pass from
Sara Snotherly. Five minutes later,
Deycasha Miller cashed in on another assist from Snotherly to score her first goal of the season at the 17:23 mark, 2-0. In the 29th minute,
Angelica Santos registered her first goal of the season off a pass from
Piper Wells to bring the lead up to 3-0. Santos scored again less than three minutes later after picking up a loose ball in the box to increase the deficit to 4-0.
Elizabeth Rougcher recorded the fifth score of the game for the Monarchs after grabbing a pass from
Anna Rose Sink at the 36:24 mark. MU marked its last goal of the half after a penalty kick was made by sink to make the halftime score 6-0.
Emily Borel posted her first career goal in the 58th minute to bring the score to 7-0, before Sink tallied her third goal of the game at the 61:37 mark, 8-0. A few minutes later,
Miranda Gay registered her first goal of the year to make it a 10-0 game. In the 71st minute,
Amber Conrad scored her first of the season and improved the lead to 11-0 before Rougcher tallied her second goal of the contest after receiving a pass from Santos, 12-0.
The Monarchs registered 51 shots with 30 on goal, which is the most in game since the 2007 season, and held Mary Baldwin without a shot. MU also posted 18 corner kicks, including 14 in the first half.
Junior
Meaghan O'Meara (1-3) and sophomore
Catie Gaughan combined for the shutout without facing a shot, while Brittany Tenn (0-6) collected 18 saves in the loss.
The Monarchs finish their weekend home stand tomorrow, Sept. 18, against Ferrum at 1 pm.
