ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — The Methodist women's soccer team scored early in the second overtime period to defeat N.C. Wesleyan, 2-1, in conference play on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Monarchs improve to 2-4 on the year with a 2-1 league record. Meanwhile, the Battling Bishops fall to 3-2-1 overall with a 2-1 conference mark.

N.C. Wesleyan opened the scoring when Maggie Rankin received a pass that Ella Burkhart put over the defense at the 6:46 mark of the contest, 1-0. MU was able to tie the game less than two minutes later when Jasmine Newman scored with an assist from Morgan Albertson, 1-1. The Battling Bishops struck again after a midfield free kick was sent into the box by Victoria Burkhart and Jordan Forbess put it in the back of the net in the 15th minute, 2-1. At the 25:19 mark, the Monarchs tied the game again when a Newman free kick went to Taylor Cavazos who assisted Haley Bowles in her first collegiate goal to make the score 2-2 at halftime.

The score remained tied through the second period despite 11 shots from MU, including seven on frame. Goalkeepers Meaghan O'Meara and Ashley Major combined to make six saves in the last minutes of the half, sending the game to overtime.

The Monarchs began their first overtime period of the season with two corners and two shots in the first four minutes and held the Battling Bishops without a shot until the final second of the period. The final overtime period began and quickly ended as Deycasha Miller scored an unassisted goal from 20-yards out at the 101:15 mark to win the game.

In the game, MU held a 22-11 advantage in shots, including 14 that were on target. Meanwhile, N.C. Wesleyan posted a 11-6 edge in corner kicks.
