DANVILLE, Va. – The Methodist women's soccer team scored four goals in the second half to earn a 5-0 win against Averett in USA South action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Monarchs improve to 3-4 on the year with a 3-1 league mark. Meanwhile, the Cougars fall to 5-2 overall behind a 3-1 conference record.
The game began with an offensive rush from MU which recorded seven shots in the first 14 minutes. In the 22nd minute,
Taylor Cavazos registered her first goal of the season to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead, which stood until halftime. The Methodist offense tallied 19 shots in the first period, including eight on target.
Jasmine Newman recorded her fourth goal of the season after taking a pass from
Jordan Ray at the 49:14 mark to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
Haley Bowles capitalized on a foul by Averett in the box and netted a penalty kick for her second goal of the season, 3-0 in the 57th minute. Less than five minutes later, Newman posted her second score of the game after getting an assist from
Sara Snotherly. Near the end of regulation,
Amber Conrad picked up her second goal of the season after receiving a pass from
Allison Nagel in the 89th minute, 5-0.
Junior goalkeeper
Meaghan O'Meara (3-4) earned the win after posting two saves in 80 minutes of play before giving way to
Catie Gaughan who did not face a shot. Bailee Brown (5-2) was saddled with the loss despite making 11 saves on Saturday.
The Monarchs outshot the Cougars 38-3 and held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
MU returns to action tomorrow, Sept. 25, as it travels to Raleigh, N.C. to face Meredith at 4 pm.
