Guilford Defeats MU Women's Hoops, 70-57

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Jalisia Campbell recorded her fourth double-double in the last five games, but Guilford College hung on to beat the Methodist women's basketball team, 70-57, on Monday evening at the March F. Riddle Center.

Campbell scored a team-high 20 points and pulled down 10 boards to lead the Monarchs (2-9). Christian Sanders added 12 points and six rebounds, and Kaneya Chambers chipped in 10 points for MU.

Heaven Walters scored a game-high 22 points to lead Guilford (9-1). She added nine boards as well. Anais Weatherly had 12 points and six rebounds, and Lauren Ramsey and Amy Steller scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

With the Quakers leading 7-6 midway through the first period, GC used a 10-3 run to close the quarter and assume a 17-9 lead after one. Methodist fought back in the second quarter, pulling to within 21-19 on a short jumper by Campbell, but Guilford closed the period on another run, this one a 12-4 spurt, to take a 33-23 lead into the locker room.

After pulling ahead by as many as 14 points (52-38) late in the third quarter, the Quakers saw the Monarchs come storming back once more. A 13-4 burst by the Monarchs, including six points from Chambers and five from Sanders, saw MU get within five points (56-51) and prompted a GC timeout with just under five minutes remaining in the contest.

Six straight points from Guilford coming out of the stoppage ignited a 10-2 run that gave the visitors a 66-53 lead with 1:50 to play and sealed the victory.

Methodist shot 39.1 percent for the game (25-64) and made just seven trips to the free-throw line, converting four tries. Guilford shot 41.0 percent (25-61) but converted 18 of 25 free-throw attempts (.720). Guilford held a slight 42-37 edge in rebounding and turned the ball over 16 times to 18 for the Green and Gold.

Methodist returns to play on Saturday at home when it hosts Mary Baldwin at 2:00 pm.
