FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist women's soccer team dropped a tough, 2-1 contest against Meredith at the Monarch Soccerplex in its regular season finale on Saturday night.

Prior to the contest, the team honored its senior class.

With the result, the Monarchs finish the regular season with a 5-10 overall record with a 4-3 mark in league play. MU clinched the No. 4 seed in the East. Meanwhile, the Avenging Angels move to 12-4-1 on the season behind a 6-1 mark in league play. Meredith will serve as the No. 2 seed in the East in the USA South Tournament.

Jessica Wallace laced a shot from 20 yards out to give the Angels a 1-0 lead just 8:59 into the game. The Angels added another score in the 38th minute as Katie Quinn notched a goal. Meredith held the 2-0 lead into halftime.

After the recess, the Monarchs scored to cut the deficit to just one goal as
Emily Borel knocked home a cross from
Liz Rougcher. MU forced the Meredith goalkeeper to make four saves in the second half, but could not get the ball behind her as the Angels held on for a 2-1 victory.

Senior
Meaghan O'Meara played the first half and conceded two goals, while
Emily Benton closed out the game, stopping three shots. Meanwhile, Jaisa Loch made four saves and allowed one goal in the win.

MU outshot the Angels by a slim 10-9 margin, while Meredith had a slight edge in corner kicks, 5-4. All four of the Monarch corner kicks occurred in the second half. A total of 25 fouls were called with an almost even split as the Angels were called for 13. Also, three yellow cards were given, including two on Meredith.

Methodist returns to action for the first round of the USA South Tournament against Ferrum at the Monarch Soccerplex beginning at 4 pm. The contest will precede the MU men's soccer team closing its regular season against N.C. Wesleyan at 7 pm.
