WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Methodist women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the USA South Tournament with a 4-2 win at the No. 1 seed in the East, Salem, on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Monarchs improve to 7-10 on the year, while the Spirits end their season at 13-4.

Salem scored five minutes into the contest as it assumed a 1-0 lead. Near the end of the period,
Capri Clark got MU on the board with just under 10 minutes remaining, 1-1. Salem was able to score one more just before the end of the half as the Spirits held a 2-1 lead at the half.

In the second half, the Monarchs tied the game with 34:20 remaining in regulation on a penalty kick by
Sierra Swasey.
Jasmine Newman added another goal as the Monarchs took its first lead of the game, 3-2, under 16 minutes left to play.
Alexa Smith tallied one more before the end of the game as MU held on to a 4-2 win.

Salem outshot the Monarchs 11-8, while holding a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Emily Benton made seven saves in all 90 minutes, while Hannah Wagner pushed aside one shot.

Methodist returns to action in the semifinals of the league tournament against the No. 3 seed in the West, Covenant, on Friday, Nov. 3 beginning at 4 pm.
