Monarchs Defeated by Battling Bishops, 71-57

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist women's basketball team was defeated by N.C. Wesleyan 71-57 in the Riddle Center on Wednesday night.
 
Jalisia Campbell led the Monarchs (5-15, 3-6) with 18 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Christian Sanders tallied14 points with three rebounds, three steals and two blocks in 40 minutes, while Sydney Bryan recorded 13 points on 6 of 7 shooting and also had three blocks.
 
For the Battling Bishops (9-11, 4-5), KeChae Parker finished with 18 points after making 8 of 11 free-throws to go along with nine rebounds and four steals. Daijah Davis shot 5 of 11 from the field to finish with 11 points and also recorded five steals and three assists.
 
MU took an early four-point lead before each side alternated scores until the game was tied, 10-10, after a layup from Campbell. The Monarchs ended the first quarter with a two-point advantage (16-14) after a pair of free throws from Parker inside the last 30 seconds. The first period saw four lead changes and two ties.
 
In the second quarter, a layup from Bryan gave MU a three-point advantage (19-16) before the Bishops posted eight-consecutive points capped by a trey from Alexis Fitzgerald to five the visitors a five point lead, 24-19. NCWC led by as many as 11 points in the period before entering halftime with a 37-29 lead.
 
The Green and Gold whittled the deficit down to six points in the third period after a jumper by Campbell made the score 48-42 with just under two minutes left in the quarter. The Bishops ended the period with an 11-point lead and did not lead by less than nine points on their way to a 71-57 victory.
 
MU shot 37.9 percent (22-58) from the floor, while NCWC connected on 33.8 percent (24-71) from the field after making 47.1 percent (8-17) from beyond the arc. The Bishops held a 55-33 edge in rebounds and also scored 30 points off of 22 Monarch turnovers.
 
In addition, Amber Scott finished with a season-high seven rebounds to go along with three points, while Niki Mumphery ended the night with a game-high five assists and added three rebounds.
 
The Monarchs return to action Feb. 4, as they travel to Mary Baldwin with tipoff scheduled for 4 pm.
