DEMOREST, Ga. – The Methodist baseball team ended the weekend with a 12-10 loss to Christopher Newport on the final day of the Piedmont Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The Monarchs (2-3) took the lead in the home half of the first inning after
Mathias Carter drew a lead-off walk and eventually came around to score on an RBI single by
Davis Cass. The Captains (1-2) responded in the top of the second after getting two unearned runs with two outs. MU tied the contest in the following half inning after
Brennan Brown, Carter and
Pete Wildeboer loaded the bases with two outs.
Lucas Scott was hit by a pitch to allow Brown to score and tie the game, 2-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Monarchs loaded the bases with no outs before Brown crossed home plate on a walk drawn by Cass.
Will May followed the at-bat with an RBI single to score Carter from third base before Scott scored on a sacrifice fly from
Kevin Williams. The Green and Gold recorded one more run on a single by
Clay Richardson to take a 6-2 lead.
The Captains responded with a four-run inning of their own after a two-run single with no outs forced a pitching change. Three batters later, two consecutive base hits yielded two runs to tie the game, 6-6. The Monarchs took the lead again in the bottom of the inning after Brown scored from third on a wild pitch. In the seventh inning, MU added two runs on an RBI triple by Carter and a sacrifice fly from Wildeboer.
CNU got two runs back in the eighth before rallying in the ninth to plate four runners and take a 12-9 lead. The Monarchs got one run back in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score, 12-10.
Nick Norton (1-1) recorded the loss after 0.1 innings of relief and allowing three runs. Joe Burris (1-0) tossed 2.0 innings on the mound and allowed one run on two hits and struck out four to earn the win.
Carter was 2 for 2 at the plate, including a triple, with an RBI and three runs scored. Cass posted two RBI with a run scored, while Brown reached base five times, stole two bases and totaled five runs scored on Sunday afternoon. Wildeboer recorded two RBI as seven Monarchs registered at least one RBI.
Methodist returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15, against Guilford at Armstrong-Shelley Field with first pitch scheduled for 3 pm.
