Monarchs Fall to Quakers, 10-4

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist baseball team dropped a 10-4 contest to Guilford at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Wednesday evening.
 
The Monarchs (2-4) got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. Alex Kachler reached base with one out on an error and eventually came around to score after a base hit by Pete Wildeboer and a balk by the pitcher, 1-0. In the bottom of the fourth, Davis Cass started the inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a bunt single by Will May. A sacrifice bunt from Brennan Brown allowed Cass to score to increase the lead to 2-0. Clay Richardson singled to the left side to put runners in the corners before May crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Ethan Carmack. Kachler ended the scoring for MU with an RBI double to right field to give the Monarchs a 4-0 lead.
 
In the ensuing half-inning, the Quakers (4-2) responded with four runs after three-consecutive base hits, capped by a two-run single by Laws, to tie the game, 4-4. In the seventh, GC added three more runs on three hits to take a 7-4 lead before adding three more runs in the ninth inning.
 
Lance Fuerstenburg (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings of work. Tyler Hardee got the start and scattered one hit with one strikeout in 1.0 inning on the mound. Jones received the win after tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with a strikeout.
 
Kachler ended the day 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, while four other players recorded a hit.
 
Methodist returns to action as it opens play in the Diamond Invitational on Friday, Feb. 17, against Mary Washington at Armstrong-Shelley Field beginning at 4 pm.
