FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team picked up its first two wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Bridgewater on Sunday afternoon at Price Field.

The Monarchs (2-6) took a 10-2 win in five innings in the opener and followed that with a 5-1 win over the Eagles (0-2) in the nightcap.

Lindsey Champion picked up the win for MU in the opener, allowing just two runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.

She was backed by an offense that banged out 16 hits and scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings. Champion and
Aly Thomas opened the scoring in the first, driving in runs on a groundout and a single back up the middle, respectively.

The Eagles got a run back in the second, but three more runs from MU in the bottom of the frame, including another RBI single by Champion, made it 5-1. MU tacked on four more runs in the third inning, with Champion driving in yet another run with a sacrifice fly for a 9-1 lead.

Bridgewater scored in the fifth inning to make it 9-2, but the Monarchs got the run-rule victory when Thomas drove in
Britnie Adams with a double to left to end the game.

Samantha Jacobs was 3 for 4 with three runs out of the leadoff spot for MU. Champion and
Chloe Hespeler each drove in three runs on a pair of base hits, and
Allyson Aycock went 2 for 3 with a run scored for the Monarchs.

Anna Patterson took the loss for BC, giving up eight runs (7 ER) on 11 hits and a walk in 2.1 innings. Carlita Hibbs and Stephanie Carroll each went 1 for 1 with a walk and a run scored.

In the nightcap, Thomas picked up the win (1-3) after allowing just on unearned run on seven hits with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Morgan Faircloth scored on a wild pitch in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead, before MU plated four runs in the fourth inning.

Emily Hester double with two outs and moved to third on a single by Aycock. After Aycock stole second, she moved to third and Hester scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Hannah Key followed with a walk and Aycock came home on another wild pitch to make it 3-0. Jacobs added an RBI single and a passed ball plated
Savannah Dunn for the final run of the inning and a 5-0 lead.

Bridgewater scored its lone run in the fifth inning on an MU error in the field.

Jacobs and Hespeler each had two base hits for the Monarchs, and Hester and Aycock each went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Brooke Louden (0-1) took the loss for BC, allowing five runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

Methodist will host Messiah on Thursday beginning at 3:00 pm.
