FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against #3 Messiah at Price Field on Thursday evening.
The Monarchs fall to 2-8 overall on the season. Meanwhile, the Falcons, who was the runner-up at the 2016 Division III National Championships, open their season at 2-0.
Morgan Faircloth finished game one with a hit and an RBI, while both
Samantha Jacobs and
Emily Hester scored a run. Eight different Monarchs recorded a hit in the first contest on Thursday.
The Falcons posted four runs in the first inning after loading the bases with two outs and taking advantage of a fielding error. MU got one run back after Jacobs led off the home half of the first with a triple and scored on a single to center by Faircloth, 4-1. The Monarchs cut the lead by one in the following inning after Hester scored on a wild pitch.
In the seventh inning, Messiah added another four runs, including two on an inside-the-park homerun on a fly ball to right field that went past a diving fielder. The Falcons held on to win game one, 8-2.
Aly Thomas (1-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs (three earned) on nine hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. Sam Fouracre (1-0) recorded the win after tossing 5.0 scoreless innings and scattering five hits. Madelyn Yannetti started the game and threw 2.0 innings in the cirle and yielded two runs (earned) on three hits.
In game two, the Falcons scored in the third inning on a sacrifice bunt play to take a 1-0 lead. The visitors added three more runs in the fourth before plating two more in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Messiah tallied four more runs, including a three-run homer run to left field by Erin Cressman to take a 10-0 lead.
Chloe Hespeler (1-4) pitched 4.0 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Heidi Foreman threw 2.0 innings of relief in the circle and surrendered four runs (two earned) on five hits. Carrie Fix (1-0) tossed a one-hitter in 6.0 scoreless innings to get the win.
The Monarchs return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, with a doubleheader against McDaniel at Price Field beginning at 12 pm.
