FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against McDaniel at Price Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the results, the Monarchs fall to 2-10 on the season, while the Green Terror improves to 2-0.
In game one, McDaniel struck first in the third inning on an RBI double to left field. The Green Terror added another run in the fourth on a single to right field, 2-0. McDaniel struck again in the fifth inning crossing the plate three times to jump out to a 5-0 lead.
The Monarchs cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh after
Jordan Pietrolaj reached on an error and advanced to second. After
Savannah Dunn walked,
Samantha Jacobs loaded the bases after the defense could not produce an out.
Autumn Elder pinch hit and cleared the bases to make the score 5-3, but two-straight outs ended the game.
Aly Thomas was strapped with the loss after 4.1 innings in the circle and allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits.
Chloe Hespeler finished the contest with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits and striking out two batters. Jamie Weisser pitched a complete game and yielded three runs (one earned) on five hits.
The Monarchs were held to five hits with five different batters tallying a hit.
In game two, McDaniel gained a 2-0 lead entering the third inning before the Monarchs tied the game. Jacobs led off with a triple before scoring on a bunt by
Morgan Faircloth. With runners on the corners,
Lindsey Champion recorded a sacrifice fly to left field to score
Lori Martin, who ran for Faircloth.
During the following inning, the Green Terror collected four hits and took advantage of an error to put up four runs and forcing a pitching change, 6-2. MU responded with two runs on one hit and an error to trim the deficit to 6-4. McDaniel extended its lead in the fifth after scoring three runs with two outs to jump out to a 9-4 lead. The Monarchs scored four more times, including three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not come back, falling 10-8.
Champion was saddled with the loss after 3.1 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits. Cassie Rickrode received the win after pitching 4.0 innings and yielding six runs (three earned) on six hits.
Jacobs finished the game 5 for 5 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. Champion also had a multi-hit game.
Methodist returns to action tomorrow, Feb. 26, with a home doubleheader against Emory & Henry scheduled to begin at 1 pm.
