Clarkson Leads MU Men's Lax Past Brevard, 16-11

FORT MILL, S.C. -- The Methodist men's lacrosse team outscored Brevard 11-3 in the second half and Kyle Clarkson set a new single-game scoring record in a 16-11 win over the Tornados in a game played at Fort Mill High School on Wednesday evening.
 
Clarkson finished with five goals and five assists for a total of 10 points, breaking the previous record of nine held by Matt Layden. Jake Smerka added four goals and four assists for eight points, and Chris Lombardi tallied four goals with one assist to lead the MU offense.
 
Following an hour-long lightning delay late in the second quarter, the Monarchs (1-1) entered halftime trailing 8-5, despite winning 13 of 15 first-half faceoffs and out shooting Brevard 22-17 in the first half. Lombardi scored consecutive goals for MU to open the third quarter to pull the Green and Gold within 8-7 before the Tornados got a man-up goal from Hewitt Farr to make it 9-7 with 10:04 left in the period.
 
The Monarchs answered with nine straight goals, including a stretch of seven tallies that were either scored or assisted by Clarkson, as MU roared to a 16-9 lead with 4:14 to play. Five of the Monarchs' goals came with a man advantage, and MU was 6 of 11 on the night playing with an extra man.
 
Brevard scored two man up goals in the final 1:10 to account for the final score.
 
Methodist dominated the statsheet, outshooting BC, 53-25, winning 25 of 30 faceoffs, and converting 18 of 23 clears.
 
Jordan DeSalvo wnet 17 for 19 at the faceoff X and picked up nine ground balls. Trent Diaz was 8 for 11 in faceoffs, and Kyle Peacock had five ground balls. AJ Mejia picked up four ground balls, and Smerka and John Tartline each had three. Jay Robinson contributed to the offense with a goal and two assists and also had one caused turnover.
 
Clay Stevenson started in the cage and made four saves with seven goals allowed in 27:40. Jackson Bingham relieved him and played the final 32:20, make two saves with four goals allowed to pick up the win (1-0).
 
Brevard's Xzavier Holmes-Copeland took the loss in goal, he started and played 49:09, allowing 11 goals with four saves. Chris Stallings played the final 10:51 and made four saves with five goals allowed. Farr led the Tornados with three goals and an assist. Jackson McKaig scored three times, and Kyle Hunziker added a pair of goals and one assist. McKaig, Dennis Rammacher and David Buono each had four ground balls.
 
The Monarchs open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday when they host Marymount (Va.) at 12:00 pm.
