FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Averett at Price Field on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs were defeated in the first game 11-3, before falling 5-0 in game two.
With the results, the Monarchs drop to 4-16 on the season and are now 1-3 in league play. Meanwhile, the Cougars improve to 13-11 overall behind a 5-1 mark in conference action.
In game one, both teams combined for five hits over the first three innings of play. In the top of the fourth, Averett exploded for a six-run inning on five hits, including a two-run triple to right-center field. All six runs were scored with two outs. The Cougars added another run in the sixth before tallying a four-run seventh inning to take an 11-0 lead. In the seventh,
Jessica Orwick started the inning for the Monarchs with a base hit to lef before MU loaded the bases with
Ellie Gale and
Heidi Foreman.
Emily Hester lace a single to center that allowed Orwick to score, 11-1.
Lori Martin, who pinch ran for Gale, scored on a groundout before a two-out single by
Hannah Key plated Foreman to make the score 11-3.
Aly Thomas (1-7) was strapped with the loss after pitching 4.0 innings and allowing six runs (earned) on eight hits with one walk and a strikeout.
Emily Hester finished the game in the circle and let up five runs (one earned) on five hits with two strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Taylor Bailey (7-5) tossed a complete game and yielded three runs (earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Key was 4 for 4 at the plate with an RBI, while Hester and Orwick each recorded two hits.
In game two, AU scored first in the top of the second inning after a lead-off double and a wild pitch allowed Andrea Grant to come around and score on a groundout, 1-0. The one-run lead held until the seventh inning as the Cougars plated four runs on two hits and took advantage of a fielding error to extend the lead to 5-0.
Chloe Hespeler (2-6) was saddled with the loss, but tossed a complete game and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts. Kaitlyn Aherron (5-4) pitched a complete game shutout scattering just three hits with 10 strikouts.
Foreman,
Olivia Rust and Orwick each recorded a hit in the second game of the doubleheader.
Tomorrow's doubleheader with Meredith has been postponed due to weather conditions. The twinbill will be played on Tuesday, March 14, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 3 pm.
