FERRUM, Va. — The Methodist women's lacrosse team scored the final eight goals in producing a 10-5 win at Ferrum on Wednesday evening.
The Panthers (5-5, 1-3 USA South), behind four goals from Kiani Mohica, raced out to a 5-2 lead by the 4:56 mark of the first half.
Following Mohica's last goal, the Monarchs closed out the first half with a flourish.
Tori Manahan scored an unassisted goal for MU to make it 5-3 with 2:31 left until halftime. Renee Burt scored her second goal of the game off a feed from Monti Hendrix at the 1:16 mark for a 5-4 game and Hendrix capped the first half with a pair of goals in the final 12 seconds to give the Monarchs a 6-5 lead at the break.
Burt completed her hat trick early in the second half to make it 7-5, and three more goals from MU proved to be more than enough. The Methodist defense yielded just one shot in the second half, and MU claimed 4 of 5 draw controls in the second half to dominate possession.
Jannelle Gant made four saves in the cage for MU, while her counterpart, Graceanne Gershner, made 12 saves in the loss.
Methodist outshot FC, 31-10, committed nine turnovers to 14 for the Panthers and won 11 of 16 draw controls.
Burt and Hendrix each finished with three points to lead the MU offense. Manahan had four draw controls and three ground balls. Sarena Pillow and Hendrix each had three draw controls.
Audrey Ramsey had four draw controls and three ground balls for Ferrum, and Chanda Long added four caused turnovers.
Methodist plays host to Huntingdon on Saturday beginning at 12:00 pm.
