Methodist Rallies Past Ferrum in Baseball, 4-3

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist baseball team closed out its weekend series with a 4-3 victory against Ferrum at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Sunday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Monarchs improve to 10-6 on the year and move to 2-1 in league play. Meanwhile, the Panthers drop to 5-7 overall behind a 1-2 mark in conference action.
 
FC started the scoring in the third inning after getting two runners in scoring position. Ty Comer singled down the left field line to score both runners before he was thrown out trying to stretch his single into a double and ended the inning, 2-0. The Monarchs were able to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lucas Scott was able to fight back after going down 0-2 in the count and drew walk after a 11 pitch at-bat. Matthias Carter followed with a double to left field to mover Scott to third before Brennen Brown scored Scott on a ground out, 2-1. Ferrum added another run in the seventh on a two-out, RBI double, 3-1.
 
In the home half of the seventh inning, Tucker Criswell opened the inning by reaching base on an error before advancing to third on a single by Carter. Brown placed a bunt down the third base line that scored Criswell and he advanced on a throwing error that also scored Carter from first, 3-3.
 
The Monarchs started the eighth inning with a lead-off double by Alex Kachler before Criswell came to the plate with two outs. He lined an RBI single to centerfield to give MU a 4-3 lead, which held after the Panthers left two runners on base in the ninth.
 
Logan Haines (2-0) recorded the win after pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and allowing just two hits. Tyler Hardee (ND) started on the mound and tossed 6.2 innings yielding three runs (earned) on six hits with six strikeouts. Jacob Holland (1-1) threw 1.2 innings of relief and allowed one run (earned) on two hits in the loss. Joey Pride (ND) started on the hill and tossed 6.0 innings scattering seven hits and one run (earned) with six strikeouts.
 
Brown, Carter and Wildeboer each went 3 for 4 at the plate, while Brown had two RBI and Carter scored one run. Criswell, Kachler and Scott all scored a run on Sunday.
 
Methodist returns to action on Wednesday, March 8, against Hampden-Sydney at Armstrong-Shelley Field at 4 pm.
