Hawks Down Monarchs, 10-3

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Methodist baseball team dropped a 10-3 contest to Huntingdon in USA South play on Friday night.

With the result, the Monarchs drop to 14-19 overall with a 6-10 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Hawks improve to 11-21 on the year behind an 8-8 mark in conference action.

In the first inning, HC manufactured a run after a lead-off walk followed by a single to centerfield. A pair of groundouts to the right side of the infield eventually led to the Hawks taking a 1-0 lead. Huntingdon scored one more run in the following inning on an error. The Hawks added two more runs before the Monarchs got on the board in the fourth frame. Matthias Carter opened the inning with a walk before moving to second on a wild pitch. He eventually advanced to third before scoring on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Lucas Scott, 4-1.

The Hawks tallied two runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead until registering four runs in the sixth frame after recording four runs on three hits to extend the lead to 10-1. MU opened the eighth inning with a single to right-center field by Clay Richardson and a walk by Carter. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Brennen Brown. Richardson came around to score after a groundout to deep-short by Lucas Scott before Carter crossed home plate on an error, which was put into play by Tucker Criswell, 10-3. The lead held through the final innings.

Greg Johnson was charged with the loss after starting on the mound and tossing 2.2 innings. He allowed four runs (3 ER) on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Zach McGrady pitched a complete game and surrendered three runs (2 ER) on four hits and seven strikeouts, but walked five batters.

The Monarchs combined for just four hits as brown, Scott, Tyler Hardee and Richardson each collected a base hit. Carter scored two runs, while Scott registered two RBI.

Methodist and Huntingdon close out the series with a doubleheader tomorrow, April 8, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
