FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought, 1-0, contest to Sewanee in overtime at the Monarch Soccerplex on Sunday afternoon.
Â
With the result, the Monarchs fall to 1-2-1 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 3-2 overall.
Â
Despite combining for eight shots, including six on target, neither team could score in the first half. The best chance for MU came in the 26th minute when a shot from
Zvi Ferrari was stopped by a diving Sewanee goalkeeper, but the rebound went right to the foot of
Isaac Sanchez. The ensuing shot was saved by a Tiger defender who stepped in front of an open net. Sanchez had another chance that was parried away for a corner kick to result in three scoring chances in under 10 seconds from the Monarchs.
Â
Four yellow cards were handed out in the second half in addition to one given late in the first period. Overall, the two sides combined for 30 fouls. The Tigers garnered multiple scoring chances later in the second half, but were all pushed aside by
Jonathan Moore as the game remained in scoreless draw at the end of regulation.
Â
Sewanee took advantage of a corner kick in the 94th minute as Kyle Johnston was able to beat Moore with a header to his left side to record a game-winning goal.
Â
Moore allowed one goal and made seven saves in all 94 minutes, while Will Merriman pushed aside three chances.
Â
Sewanee outshot the Monarchs by an 11-8 margin, while also holding an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Methodist returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 13, against Guilford at the Monarch Soccerplex beginning at 7 pm.
