NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Methodist women's soccer team dropped a 9-1 contest to Virginia Wesleyan in a neutral-site match at the Christopher Newport Invitational on Friday evening.

With the loss, the Monarchs move to 0-3 on the season, while the Marlins improve to 1-2-1 overall.

VWU started the scoring at the 3:13 mark when Marli Hayward was able to beat the goalkeeper to the left side, 1-0. Five minutes later, Anna Pedicone netted a goal on a shot from the right side outside of the box, 2-0. The score held for the rest of the period as the Marlins took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

After the break, Alex Davidson scored from 35 yards out in the 47th minute to give VWU a 3-0 advantage. Davidson followed up with another goal at the 47:33 mark with an assist from Hayward as the Marlins took a 4-0 lead. VWU posted three more goals before the Monarchs got on the board in the 61st minute as
Jasmine Newman tallied her first goal of the season, 7-1. The Marlins added two more goals to take a 9-1 victory.

Meaghan O'Meara started in goal and allowed two goals with two saves in 45 minutes before
Maggie Hunt stopped eight of the 15 shots she faced in the second half. For the Marlins, Alicia Zamora pushed aside both shots she faced in 45 minutes. Rachel Colt allowed one goal in 41 minutes, while Tristen Roberts played the remaining four minutes and did not face a shot.

The Marlins outshot the Monarchs 25-6, including 19 on target, while also holding an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
