Meredith Holds Off MU WBB, 76-64

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Chandler Hines scored 27 points to lead Meredith to a 76-64 win over the Methodist women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
 
Both teams now sit with 2-13 overall records and 2-5 league ledgers.
 
Kodi Centry poured in 18 points and added six rebounds for the Monarchs, while Kayla Goldsmith added 12 points with eight rebounds. Kaneya Chambers and Kadie Snipes each scored nine points and Snipes had three assists.
 
Hines shot 10 for 17 on the day and was 6 of 9 from long range, including hitting three in a decisive third quarter for the Avenging Angels.
 
Meredith held 39-36 lead at halftime but Snipes and Goldsmith scored early in the third period and MU trailed but just one (41-40) before a 9-1 run from MC gave the hosts a 50-41. A jumper from Snipes and two more buckets by Goldsmith got the Monarchs back within a possession at 50-47. However, the Avenging Angels closed the period on an 18-6 run for a 68-53 lead entering the fourth quarter.
 
The Avenging Angels missed only one shot attempt in the third quarter, knocking down 10 of 11 shot attempts, including 4 of 5 three-point attempts. The Monarchs shot 7 of 17 in the third quarter as MC finished with a 29-17 scoring edge in the quarter.
 
Both offenses slowed down significantly in the fourth period as MU closed the game with an 11-8 edge in the fourth quarter.
 
A six-point lead for MC after the first quarter grew to nine points (26-17) in the second quarter before Centry and Chambers led a 12-4 MU charge that pulled the Monarchs within a point at 30-29. Chambers scored five points during the burst and Centry scored seven, including the final six on successive possessions late in the stanza.
 
Meredith briefly stretched its lead back up to eight (39-31), but the Monarchs scored the final five points of the first half to make it 39-36 at the break.
 
In addition to Hines, Kimberly Schuh had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists for Meredith, and Meghan Pleasants added 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting to go with six rebounds.
 
The Monarchs host N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
