Santos, Clark score for Monarchs at Salem

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Monarchs lost Wednesday afternoon to host Salem University, 3-2, in USA South Athletics Conference women's soccer action. The Spirits used three consecutive second half goals to lift themselves past Methodist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Even though Methodist was outshot a staggering 21-7, the shots on goal numbers were almost even. Methodist was calculated, putting six of its seven shots on target compared to Salem putting eight of its shots on frame.
  • Angelica Santos scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute when she put it past the keeper following Haley Bowles' corner kick.
  • In the first half, the Spirits' attack was frenzied as they put up 13 shots but managed only two on target. The majority of the shots were high or the Monarch defense was in good position to block some of the shots.
  • Santos scored her goal a minute after subbing into the game.
  • The Spirits tied up the match in the 49th minute with a goal from Hope Morrison.
  • Alyssa Denkovich's goal in the 61st minute proved to be the game-winner. Ellie Montes scored a third Spirits' goal in the 84th minute to widen the deficit.
  • When down 2-1, the Monarchs put three shots on target but Salem goalkeeper Hannah Wagner was able to come up with the saves.
  • On an assist from Gillian Niesel, Capri Clark scored a goal in the 87th minute to narrow the deficit to just 3-2. Cheyenne Ferrin's shot with two seconds remaining was too high for the potential equalizer.
  • This physical matchup contained 18 fouls between both teams.

BEYOND THE STATS
  • Santos led the Monarchs in shots and shots on goal with three.
  • Her goal was Santos' second of the season.
  • Capri Clark scored her third goal of the season in four appearances. Clark had not played in a game since September 4 against Barton College.
  • Maggie Hunt earned five saves in goal for Methodist.

SPIRIT'S STUDY
  • Hope Morrison and Alyssa Denkovich are defenders who each registered their second goal of the season.
  • Wagner earned four saves in the game.
