Scots pull away from pesky Monarchs in 4th quarter

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist dropped a closer-than-the-score-indicates 34-9 decision to visiting Maryville (Tenn.) in USA South conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Scots used a 21-point fourth quarter to secure the victory.

The score was only 10-9 with Maryville ahead at halftime, and was still a one-possession game entering the fourth quarter. Ultimately, the Monarchs' offense which had a penchant for big, explosive plays through the first four games of the season, was unable to replicate that against the Scots.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Maryville def. Methodist, 34-9
Records: Methodist 1-4 overall (1-2 USA South), Maryville 3-2 (3-0)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The one big offensive play by Methodist was the sole Monarch touchdown. Steve Keoni hit Josh Carter for a 60-yard touchdown to break a 3-3 tie.
  • Despite allowing 34 points, the Monarchs' defense played very well, making several big plays and forcing Maryville to settle for several field goals.
  • Methodist had two goal line stands with the Scots less than ten yards away of a touchdown. Methodist forced a third field goal with Maryville inside the 20-yard line looking to score to keep the score close.
  • The Monarchs' Brian Stone came away with two key interceptions in the first half. Both interceptions occurred on Methodist's side of the field. The second interception set up Carter's touchdown.
  • With less than three minutes to go until halftime, the Scots' put together their first touchdown drive, going 11 plays for a touchdown pass as time expired for the first half.
  • For the majority of the game, Methodist was one big play, one touchdown away from leading. Unfortunately, Maryville made more of those big plays.
  • In the fourth quarter, Methodist fumbled near its own redzone. The Monarch defense responded with recovering a Maryville fumble that gave MU the ball back on the Scots' side of the field.
  • Arguably the play of the game, with Maryville leading in the fourth 20-9, the Monarchs had a chance to turn the 11-point deficit into only eight after that fumble recovery. The field goal was blocked by the Scots and returned past the 50-yard line. Two plays later, Maryville scored on a 39-yard touchdown run. The deficit went from possibly being 20-12 to 27-9.
  • After a four-and-out by Methodist, Maryville scored another touchdown with less than six minutes left in the fourth quarter.
  • For the final drive of the game, the Monarchs and quarterback Devon Cox strung together a 14-play drive that resulted in turnover on downs on a fourth-and-goal at the one with no time left.

THE STAT FACTS
  • After earlier monster performances, Vontre Howard and Josh Carter were held relatively in check. Howard had a team-high 67 rushing yards on 14 carries and Carter had five catches for 65 yards, both team-highs.
  • Keoni and Cox split time at quarterback with Cox going 9-of-20 for 82 yards and Keoni going 5-of-11 for 64 yards and a touchdown. The nine completions and 20 attempts were season-high marks for Cox, who has appeared in two other games behind center this year.
  • Brandon Bagley led with a game-high ten total tackles, four of them being solo stops.
  • Nate Jones and Kevin Voyles each had eight total tackles, five of them being solo tackles.

SCOTS' PEEK
  • The 28 first downs earned by Maryville marked a season-high for them.
  • The Scots rushed for over 230 yards in their four straight game with Elijah Chenier leading the way with 18 carries for 127 yards. Marcus Pierce (10 for 58 yards) and Jacob Bunch (seven for 49 yards) were also key contributors.
  • Quarterback Nelson Smith went 15-of-22 for 180 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. He also added 22 yards on the ground. To show off his versatility, Smith had two punts for 60 yards.
  • Mac Seagles had a game-high 66 receiving yards on three catches and Terry Stewart had 4 catches for 60 receiving yards.
  • Kicker Ian Hubbs went 2-of-3 on field goals. He made kicks from distances of 25 and 30, and missed from 31 yards. He made all four of his extra point attempts. Last season, Hubbs was a killer as he went 5-of-5 on field goals, including makes of 45 and 46 yards.
