Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Morris marker opens scoring, Maryville closes it in OT

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Conor Morris provided the first goal of Saturday's USA South Athletic Conference men's soccer game between host Methodist and Maryville College, but it was the visiting Scots who netted the closing goal with an overtime winner in a 2-1 victory at the Monarch Soccerplex.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Maryville def. Methodist, 2-1 OT
Records: Methodist 6-6-2 overall (3-4-2 USA South), Maryville 9-3-1 (8-2-0)
Location: Monarch Soccerplex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist had been pressuring in its attacking third beginning with an Oxie Itoua shot on goal in the 16th minute.
  • The Monarchs continued with possession and earned a corner kick chance three minutes later but weren't able to connect.
  • Early in the 23rd, however, Nick Bryant did connect, sending a pass Morris' way and he was able to deposit a shot behind Maryville goalkeeper Ryan Jorgensen for a team-leading fourth goal of the season by Morris.
  • That would be one of only two shots in the opening half by Methodist, but with a one-goal lead at the break, the Monarchs would take efficiency over quantity.
  • Both teams worked to gain more pressure on goal in the second half, and both succeeded. Methodist doubled its shot total to four, while the Scots upped theirs by one, getting off five shots in the second 45.
  • One of those shots was a big one, though. Nate Long's unassisted goal late in the 73rd knotted the game at 1-1. Maryville's Cole Hilton would try to break the deadlock with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, only to have Scott Brecke come up the save and inch the game closer to an overtime period.
  • The Monarchs earned a pair of scoring chances early in the scheduled 10-minute OT period. Lawson Lamm's header on frame was picked by Jorgensen, and one minute later Lamm reeled off another shot that Jorgensen needed to, and did stop.
  • The ensuing transition proved golden for the Scots who ended the game with Randy Reichenberger's goal early in the fifth minute of the extra period.
  • Brecke finished the game with five saves, against the six that Jorgensen came up with.

CONFERENCE CHATTER
  • Maryville's win keeps the Scots in the hunt for the USA South West Division title. They are one point shy of West leader Covenant, but have played one less game to date.
  • Methodist wasn't moving anywhere in the East Division standings, win or lose on Saturday. The Monarchs sit solidly in fourth within the Division as the conference postseason approaches.

NEXT UP
  • Methodist plays Berea on Sunday at the Monarch Soccerplex, taking on the Mountaineers in a 2 p.m. league match-up.
  • Maryville visits North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday for a conference contest at 2:30 p.m.
