Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ja'Shawn Steward-Johnson

Monarchs earn 3rd place in East Division of conference

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  110 minutes was not enough as Methodist women's soccer played Meredith to a scoreless draw on Senior Night, Saturday evening in USA South conference play.

It was a battle of the goalkeepers as the Monarchs' Catie Gaughan and Maggie Hunt pitched a combined shutout and Meredith's Miranda Lutz earned a career-high 18 saves, including 12 in the second period.

Even though a draw was not in the Monarchs' plan, the one point earned in conference was enough to break a tie in the league standings and give Methodist No. 3 seed in the East Division outright. The tie also gives Head Coach Bryan Madej his sixth winning season at Methodist, with a season record of 7-6-1.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist ties Meredith, 0-0 OT2
Records: Methodist 7-6-1 overall (3-3-1 USA South); Meredith 6-7-2 overall (2-4-1 USA South)
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first period featured six shots between both teams and three shots on target.
  • The second period was a flurry of a half compared to the first half. Methodist put 12 of 13 shots on target and Meredith put all four of its shots on target.
  • In the overtime periods, the Monarchs outshot the Avenging Angels 7-3.
  • The Monarchs could not take advantage of the nine corner kicks they had. Usually deadly when given such an advantage, Methodist was unable to convert those chances into points. The Avenging Angels only had one corner kick.
  • Of the nine Methodist corner kicks, four resulted in a shot less than a minute later. Three of those four shots were a save by Lutz.
  • The Monarchs put up a whopping 25 shots with 18 being on goal compared to seven of Meredith's eight shots being on goal.
  • There were numerous times where the fans on the packed bleachers thought a Monarch goal was coming but Lutz always ended up making the play.
  • A moment that almost resulted in a Methodist goal came in the 64th minute. Miranda Gay sent in a shot from the penalty box that was saved and a moment later, the rebound was right at her feet in the goal box and Lutz came up with the save anyways.

THE STAT FACTS
  • The 18 saves marked a career-high for the freshman Lutz. The 12 saves in the second half alone was a career-high. Seven saves against N.C. Wesleyan was her previous mark.
  • Haley Bowles and Alexa Smith were aggressive, putting up four shots each for the Monarchs. Smith, Bella Nunu, and Miranda Gay each had a game-high three shots on target.
  • Catie Gaughan started the whole first half of the game and earned one save. Maggie Hunt played the other 65 minutes and earned six saves.

SENIOR NIGHT
  • Before the game, the six seniors from the Monarch team were honored. Capri Clark, Miranda Cowardin, Sierra Garcia, Angelica Santos, and Catie and Danielle Gaughan made up the class of 2019 who won 38 games, with a conference record of 24-11-3.
  • The six seniors have combined to start 105 games, score 40 goals, and earn nine assists.
  • These Monarchs helped lead Methodist into the conference championship twice and they won the championship in 2016.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist will host the first round of the USA South Conference Tournament against N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday, October 24, with the time still to be announced.
  • The Avenging Angels are on the road for the first round of the conference tournament. They travel to play Averett on Wednesday.
