OT blues for Monarchs

MISENHEIMER, N.C.  The Methodist's men soccer team fell to Pfeiffer University in a tough, 1-0 overtime loss Wednesday night in chilly conditions at Lefko Field. In a match that could have been anyone's game, it was the Falcons who came up with the clutch shot in the extra period.

Two minutes into overtime, Eddie Pinon and Kyle Kamm coordinated to capitalize off of a Tanner Knauer corner kick to win the game. Kamm assisted on Pinon's header that was scored off of the rebound.

A tightly-contested match, it featured 20 shots, 10 by each team and only five shots on goal. Methodist had two shots on target and Pfeiffer had three with the last one being for the victory.

JUST THE FACTS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a very slow ninety minutes of regulation, the needed goal came fast and early in extra time.
  • The Falcons came out firing on all cylinders in overtime as Caleb Bratager's corner kick in the 91st minute resulted in a shot on goal for Ryan Guidry. Scott Brecke's save resulted in another corner kick for Pfeiffer.
  • The Falcons capitalized off of that second corner kick for the win.
  • The first shot on target in the game came in the 9th minute by the Falcons' Caz Dabrowski.
  • Nick Bryant put a header on goal in the 22th minute for Methodist's first on target shot.
  • The third shot on goal between either team came later in the second half with a shot by Lawson Lamm.
  • The last ten minutes on regulation went on without a single shot from either team.
  • This game featured 21 fouls, 15 of which were committed by Pfeiffer. There were also four yellow cards given out, three to Falcons.
  • The Pfeiffer back line played so well that they kept a lot of shots from seeing their goalkeeper Sebastian Zertuche. Six of the seven Methodist shots in the first half were blocked. The only shot that was not blocked was the lone shot on target by Bryant.
  • In a fortunate moment for the Falcons and Zertuche, a Monarch blitz in the 29th minute resulted in zero shots on goal as Keelan Power, Ulises Sanchez, and Kyle Madden's shots were all blocked within a 15-second timespan.

CONFERENCE CHATTER
  • With Pfeiffer ineligible to compete in the USA South Tournament, the Monarchs will finish fourth in the East division, with one game left to play.
  • Despite the head-to-head loss in the standings versus Pfeiffer, Methodist still sits above the Falcons at fourth place, thanks to two fortuitous Monarch ties.
  • A win Saturday against N.C. Wesleyan ensures that Methodist finishes the season with a winning season and a .500 conference record.
  • The USA South Conference Tournament begins Tuesday, October 30.
