Hunt sets career saves mark in loss to #21 CNU

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Hunt came up with a single-game career-best 12 saves Wednesday evening in Methodist's non-conference women's soccer match-up against 21st-ranked Christopher Newport University. But the visiting Captains were able to push three behind Hunt to earn a 3-0 victory over the Monarchs.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: No. 21 Christopher Newport def. Methodist, 3-0
Records: Methodist 5-4, CNU 7-1
Location: Monarch Soccerplex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chris. Newport put pressure on the Methodist defense from the start, generating seven of the game's first eight shots.
  • Amidst that pressure was Miranda Gay's header that CNU goalkeeper Maddy Belanger saved to prevent her team from falling behind the underdog Monarchs.
  • The seventh shot from CNU broke the deadlock as, from the top of the box and left of center, Carson Pokorny found a gap in the defense and launched a rocket into the upper, right corner that skimmed past a leaping Hunt's gloves at the 21:45 mark of the first half.
  • Though the Methodist attack was limited over the remaining minutes of the stanza, Hunt and the Monarch defense held the CNU attack at bay and went into the halftime break trailing by just one goal.
  • The Captains took over the momentum in the opening seconds of the second half, peppering the Methodist frame with three shots in the initial 20 seconds, two of which necessitated diving stops from Hunt.
  • A cross in the 48th minute by Maxine Borris found Riley Cook at the left post where she tapped in a shot behind Hunt for the second marker of the game.
  • Pokorny would add a second goal seven minutes after Borris', volleying a cross from Cook into the netting for the game's final goal at the 54:14 mark.
  • CNU's attacking pressure, with their defensive line playing across midfield, made it difficult for Methodist to mount any comeback.

CAPTAIN'S TABLE
  • CNU accumulated a 43-2 shots advantage in the victory.
  • Pokorny topped the Captains with seven shots, while Cook and Gabby Gillis rang up six shots apiece.
  • A 5-0 season start by CNU was cut off by a 2-1 loss to 12th-ranked Lynchburg College, but the Captains responded with a 2-1 victory over Penn State-Harrisburg and Wednesday's win at Methodist.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist hosts Greensboro College at 4 p.m. on Saturday in a USA South contest.
  • CNU travels to Maryland where on Saturday afternoon it will take on Frostburg State.
