Ter Meer Paces Attack But N.C. Wesleyan steals win

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  Brittany Ter Meer led all players with 13 kills and Methodist accumulated 11 service aces, but host North Carolina Wesleyan won the deciding fifth set to take a 3-2 USA South victory from the visiting Monarchs Thursday evening.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist, 3-2 (25-15, 19-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10)
Records: Methodist 8-5 overall (2-3 USA South); N.C. Wesleyan 7-11 overall (2-4 USA South)
Location: Everett Gym; Rocky Mount, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The match was give and take all evening as the Battling Bishops never trailed in the opening set, only to spend most of the second set trying to keep pace with Methodist.
  • The Monarchs took narrow leads throughout the second set, only to have NCW pull even each time. Tied at 15-15, Methodist built a small cushion with three consecutive points only to have the Bishops score the next two. The Monarch were able to finish off the set, however, scoring seven of the final nine points to square the match.
  • The important third set saw five lead changes up until Methodist's 14-13 lead. A 6-0 run from the home team was the sixth and final lead change, though. The Monarchs fought off three set points late, but NCW moved ahead in the match with its 25-21 set victory.
  • The momentum the Bishops might have gained in that set didn't help them in the fourth set while with a chance to put away the Monarchs. Methodist trailed only at 3-2 and 4-2 before pushing in front then hanging on for a five-point win, recording six of the final eight points to once again knot the match score.
  • The deciding fifth never got away from Methodist, but it also never led. Tied only once, at 1-1, the Monarchs surrendered one damaging run when the Bishops stretched a 3-2 lead into a 6-2 advantage. Methodist pulled to within a point at 8-7 and again at 9-8, however the Bishops finished on a 6-2 run to capture the set and match.
  • Ter Meer's 13 kills led all players, but she was the only Monarch to record double digits in kills. Three Bishops reached double figures in kills.
  • Freshman setter Riley Adair saw her most extensive action of the season, posting 18 set assists for a collegiate-best outing, trailing only Lili Henry's 25 assists for Methodist.
  • Service aces continues to be a popular column in the box score for Methodist at it reached double digits, 11, for the third time this fall. Unfortunately, there were also 11 service errors, the fifth such double-digit occurrence, that made things difficult on the Monarchs in the match.
  • Since recording 13.5 blocks in a five-set victory at Eastern Mennonite, the Monarchs have been unable to reach that lofty number in its last three matches. In Thursday's bout they picked up two solo blocks and four block assists (4.0 total blocks), but NCW came away with 18 block assists (9.0 total blocks).
