Box Score MACON, Ga. Methodist's women's basketball team opened its 2018-19 campaign with a rousing victory Saturday afternoon, running past host Wesleyan College by a score of 69-53 behind double-digit scoring from
Kayla Goldsmith and
Kodi Centry.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Wesleyan, 69-53
Records: Methodist 1-0; Wesleyan 0-1
Location: Porter Gymnasium; Macon, Ga.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Leading by a point, 13-12, following the first quarter, Methodist exploded for 26 points in the second, getting 10 from Goldsmith, to more than double up Wesleyan's 11-point quarter. What had been a tight game entered the halftime break with the Monarchs leading by 16, 39-23.
- As bountiful as the second quarter was for Methodist, its third 10-minute frame was quite arid. Kaneya Chambers and Logan Lee had the only baskets of the quarter for Methodist, and Tyzarea Alexander dropped in the only two free-throw opportunities gained by the Monarchs.
- What helped maintain Methodist's lead on the scoreboard was a defense that again held the Wolves to just 11 points.
- Scoring multiplied in the final 10-minute quarter, for both teams. Centry worked inside and scored eight points from the floor and another from the charity stripe, while Kadie Snipes rained down a pair of 3-pointers to lead Methodist's 25-point attack. The Wolves put together their best quarter, with 19 points, but had too deep of a hole from which to dig out.
STAT FACTS
- Goldsmith and Centry led the Monarchs in scoring, but each of the duo generated most of their offense in one quarter -- Goldsmith in the second (10 points) and Centry in the fourth (nine pts.).
- Snipes finished with 10 points, hitting three of her buckets from long range behind the arc.
- Chambers just missed reaching double digits with a nine-point outing.
WOLVES ATTACK
- TK Blount tried to help Wesleyan keep pace with 17 points, aided by Diedre Maxwell's 16 points.
- That pair combined for 32 points, or 12 points more than the combined rest of the roster.
UP NEXT
- Methodist travels to Rocky Mount, N.C., for the Nov. 17-18 Jean Edge Classic, at which it will square off against Stevenson (Md.) University and Hollins (Va.) University.
- Wesleyan travels to Mount Berry, Ga., to take on host Berry College on Monday evening.
