THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Roanoke def. Methodist, xx-xx
Records: Methodist 1-4, Roanoke 4-2
Location: Cregger Center, Salem, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A slow start did its damage to the Monarchs' hopes as the Maroons jetted off to an 11-0 lead in first-quarter action.
- Alexander broke the string with the first of two free throw chances, and then added the next four Methodist points on layups to trim the deficit down to six, at 11-5.
- The Monarchs trailed by only a 15-7 count at the end of the first period, and though the Maroons would net the initial four points of the second frame that growing deficit would be cut back to single digits on a layup from Centry at the 5:09 mark.
- Those points, however, would be the last the Monarchs would score in the quarter until six seconds before halftime. The more than five minute scoreless streak would be broken by a jumper from Kadie Snipes. Unfortunately, Roanoke had reeled off 16 points in that span to blow the game open and carry a 35-12 lead into the halftime break.
- Methodist would put together its best 10-minute frame following the halftime recess, scoring 13 points, but Roanoke tallied its finest quarter as well, with 22 points.
STAT STUFF
- Snipes added seven points to Alexander's total to pace Methodist.
- 10 different players scored for the Monarchs -- including four from Taylor Hatchett and one point from Machiah Moore, each registering their first collegiate points.
- Roanoke was led by 21 points from Kristina Harrel, who also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Two more Maroons reached double digits in scoring during the victory.
- Methodist was hurt by 29 turnovers that turned into 35 Roanoke points.
- Rebounding also was tilted heavily toward the home team as Roanoke made use of a 59-37 advantage by scoring 22 second-chance points.
