LEXINGTON, Ky. Both Methodist and host Transylvania University favored the long-range jumper Friday evening in the nightcap of the Pat Deacon Classic's opening day, but the Pioneers enjoyed greater success from behind the 3-point arc as they hit 15 treys to spur the home team to a 101-48 victory over the Monarchs.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Transylvania def. Methodist, 101-48
Records: Methodist 2-7, Transylvania 8-2
Location: Clive Beck Center, Transylvania University campus, Lexington, Ky.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening minutes portended a challenging night for Methodist as Transylvania kicked off the scoring with a pair of 3-pointers, a layup, and another trey to leap out to an 11-0 advantage before Logan Lee's jumper from outside the right block put the Monarchs on the scoreboard.
- Lee's deuce came at the 7:25 mark, but Methodist struggled through a more than five-minute drought until Kayla Goldsmith knocked down a jumper from the left block at the two-minute mark.
- Compounding the Monarchs' chilly beginning of the night from the floor was the dead-eye shooting from 3-point land by the Pios, who finished the first half hitting 8-of-16 from long range.
- Pushing the defense out to slow the roll created its own consequences as Transy then found lanes to drive through, pouring in 26 first-half points from in the paint to go along with its 24 points from distance.
- Needing to come out of the halftime break with some answers, Methodist began dropping in 3-pointers of its own. Lee, Chandler True, Katlin Kendrick, True again, and then Kadie Snipes converted long-range attempts on successive trips down the court.
- Unfortunately for the Monarchs, the Pioneers were able to continue their drives to the hoop while knocking down their own bombs to equal Methodist's third-quarter rally.
KINGDOM BOX NOTES
- True led Methodist in scoring with 13 points, including nine from a 3-for-4 night beyond the arc.
- Goldsmith added nine points to Lee's eight.
- Emily Ricks picked up court-time minutes in the fourth quarter, finishing with four points -- the freshman's first points this season.
- Seven of Methodist's 18 buckets were long range 3s.
- Tyzarea Alexander, Keltsy Hardee and Goldsmith led the team's efforts off the glass with four rebounds apiece.
PIO BOX FAX
- Transy ended the evening hitting 65 percent from the floor, a figure that included 15-for-26 (58 percent) shooting behind the arc for 45 points.
- The Pioneers added 42 points from in the paint.
- A rebounding advantage of 41-28 also helped the home team keep Methodist from gaining traction with second-chance points.
- Six players reached double figures in scoring for the Pios, led by Celia Kline's 17 points. Kline was 5-of-11 from long range and early in the fourth quarter dropped in a trey to surpass the 1,000-point career plateau.
