Methodist Women's Lacrosse Falls to Roanoke, 22-7, in Season Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist women's lacrosse team opened its 2018 season with a 22-7 loss to Roanoke on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
 
Madison Ronelli and Monti Hendrix each scored three goals for MU (0-1). Ronelli added seven draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers, and Hendrix had six ground balls and a pair of draw controls. Sara Ewin led the Monarchs with three caused turnovers.
 
Behind four early goals from Katie Clements, the Maroons (1-0) opened a 7-0 lead 13 minutes into the contest before MU got on the board. Ronelli scored on a pair of free position shots to make it 7-2 at 14:47, and Hendrix pulled the Green & Gold within four (7-3) on her first goal of the contest at 14:29.
 
The Maroons went up 10-4 at the 8:22 mark and Hendrix pulled MU to within 10-5 with her second tally of the game with 7:02 left in the first half. However, Hendrix's goal was followed by 11 straight tallies from Roanoke as RC opened a 21-5 lead with 15:14 to play.
 
Hendrix completed her hat trick with 13:27 to play, and Kennedy Brogan scored her first collegiate goal with 1:32 to play as Roanoke cruised to the win.
 
Roanoke out-shot the Monarchs, 40-16, and was 16 of 18 in the clearing game compared to a 14 of 24 mark for the Monarchs. Roanoke also had 20 draw controls to 10 for MU and held an 18-14 lead in ground balls.
 
Molly O'Hara took the loss in the cage for MU, making eight saves on the day. Carly Schoudel made six saves for the Maroons.
 
Clements finished with six points on four goals and two assists for Roanoke. She also added five draw controls. Mckenna Polak added three goals and two assists, and Maggie Lewis scored twice and handed out two assists. Sarah Kroneberger had eight draw controls for RC, and Emma Boris, Ellie Armstrong and Polak all had three ground balls.
 
Methodist will play host to Brevard next Saturday beginning at 1 pm.
